Use IN THE END when you want to convey the idea of finally, eventually. In other words, something happens after a long time or considerable effort.
“It took her ages to quit her job and start a new life, but in the end, she did it and now she is a successful writer.”
Use AT THE END when you simply refer to a position at the end of something. The point where something finishes. There is no sense of waiting or delay. For instance, you can talk about something that happens at the end of a book or a film.
“She flew to New York at the end of July.”
And how about IN THE BEGINNING or AT THE BEGINNING?
You can simply think of AT THE BEGINNING as the opposite of at the end. So, the point where something starts, in this case. It is normally followed by “of”. In Spanish, it would be the equivalent of “al principio de algo”.
“At the beginning of every class, they all tell something about their lives.”
IN THE BEGINNING marks a contrast between two moments in time. It is not followed by “of”. In Spanish, it would be the equivalent of “al principio”.
“In the beginning she kept herself to herself, but after a few weeks, she had made friends with everyone in the office.”
