Learning English with Christmas Activities

Here is a bunch of ideas to help you keep learning English during the holiday.

All Christmas-related!

Pick and choose what you like most, and have fun.

Happy Holidays to you all!

Songs

Here is a little selection of Xmas songs from my Spotify list. I hope you like them and sing along. You can find the lyrics online or even better, challenge yourself to understand the songs without reading the words.

Snow, snow, snow by Izzy Harlow

I instantly loved Izzy Harlow’s sweet voice and the soft beginning of this song when I first listened to it. I’ve used it in class, too. Everyone seems to like it. Plus, aren’t we all expecting snow at this time of year? Fingers crossed we will have some.

Hang Your Lights by Jamie Cullum

Impossible to stay still while listening to the beat of Hang Your Lights. The video is fun to watch so you can sing and dance to it at the same time. Super fun!

What child is this  – Martina McBride

A much more classical style, this tune with her enveloping voice transports you to another time and place. Whether you are religious or not, this song is quite magical, in my opinion.

The gingerbread house song – Kyle Harrington

Have you ever tried to make a gingerbread house? Well, if you haven’t this song might inspire you to do so.  Or at least, it will cheer you up!

Snow, snow, snow by Michael Ford.

Fun for kids and adults alike. Singing this song with students and trying to overlap the different voices (which in fact in the original song is only Michael Ford’s) was great for a laugh.

Adverts

Another way to practise listening. Some adverts are like mini-films that tell you a story and are incredibly creative.  My students know some of John Lewis’s Xmas ads, there was a vote between last year’s and this year’s and opinions were very divided. The former won for empathy and the latter, for its festive feel. Sainsbury’s ads are also worth watching. 2014’s moving! and what a cute cat in Mog’s Christmas calamity
